At Tecan, we aim to take environmental impact into account at every stage of a consumable's lifecycle. From materials to packaging and production to disposal, we prioritize innovation that is both forward-thinking and environmentally responsible.
Every product starts with a clear purpose. At Tecan we want to deliver performance while minimizing environmental impact.
This means we consider:
From the manufacturing to the delivery of our products, we take steps to lower our emissions and conserve precious resources.
We do this by:
Minimizing the environmental impact of the materials we use in our products is important to us.
Some of the steps we take in this area include:
Our commitment to reducing environmental impact extends beyond development, manufacturing, and supply.
We want to help you be more sustainable in your lab:

Our products play a vital role in advancing healthcare innovation, and we are committed to ensuring that the design of our products do this in an environmentally conscious manner. Here is how we are making a difference:
We actively reduce the use of virgin PET derived from fossil fuels. By incorporating recycled materials and using innovative alternatives, we minimize environmental impact without compromising on product performance and quality.
The blisters of LiHa products we manufacture in Germany are made with at least 40% pre-consumer recycled PET (rPET). Pre-consumer recycled PET refers to PET plastic waste generated during manufacturing, such as offcuts or scrap, that is repurposed instead of being discarded. This approach not only diverts plastic waste from potentially being discarded but also reduces dependence on fossil fuel-derived virgin materials[i].
Figure 1 Blister from Tecan Part Number 30199162 made from DPET
The blisters of LiHa products we manufacture in the US utilize direct-to-sheet PET (DPET), an advanced form of PET that requires less energy during production (consuming 65% less electricity & 28% less thermal energy)[i], making it comparable to rPET. DPET also provides superior durability and performance, ensuring the same quality standards while using minimal materials and resources.
All PET blisters are clearly marked with recycling symbols, and our recycling guide provides comprehensive instructions to help you manage your waste responsibly. By enabling responsible disposal, we are ensuring that the materials we use can have a second life wherever possible.
Tecan pioneered a compact packaging format. This packaging design incorporates features that optimizes amount of packaging material and uses responsible material choices. Further to this, the reduced footprint of EcoPack products offer benefits for streamlined logistics.
The EcoPack packaging format allows up to 35% less material to be used to package two trays. Furthermore, carton packaging reduces the amount of plastic used in the product packaging.
For LiHa products we manufacture in Switzerland, all cardboard packaging components are made from recycled cardboard, supporting circular material use.
We are continuing to innovate in minimizing the impact of our products. In 2025 we aim to introduce a new design of SLAS format tray that encompasses several aspects of responsible design.
The new tray will be made from pre-consumer recycled plastic. In addition, the tray will be made from polypropylene (PP) which has a lower carbon footprint than other plastic types.
The new design of the single-use SLAS format tray uses 40% less plastic than current SLAS format Combi Trays.

Tecan is committed to supporting labs and companies worldwide by providing consumables essential for advancing healthcare and research. As a global company, we take the challenge of reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing, supply chain, and distribution processes seriously. Here’s how we’re working toward more sustainable operations:
Our LiHa and MCA384 disposable tips manufactured in Switzerland demonstrate our efforts to integrate renewable energy into manufacturing. These tips are produced on state-of-the-art manufacturing lines powered by >99% renewable electricity, primarily sourced from hydropower. By transitioning to renewable energy sources, we aim to lower the carbon footprint associated with production significantly.
In addition to renewable energy, our manufacturing processes utilize energy-efficient technologies such as advanced injection molding and cooling equipment. These innovations reduce energy consumption while maintaining the high-quality standards you expect from our products.
Our ISO 14001 certification reflects our structured approach to managing environmental impact. This includes efforts to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, and ensure that our processes align with internationally recognized environmental standards.
In addition, our commitment to the Science Based Targets Initiative demonstrates our focus on business activities to reduce our environmental impact. Learn about our broader sustainability practices at Tecan here.
Our compact EcoPack packaging format offers benefits in terms of streamlined logistics. By using less space, products can be transported more efficiently.
A typical pallet can, for example, transport more than double the number of tip trays in an EcoPack format compared to a conventional blister format (>1,728 trays of 1000µl tips in an EcoPack format compared to 864 trays of 1000µl tips in a conventional blister format).
The difference between Conventional packaging and EcoPack packaging for 2 trays of 96 LiHa tips.

Reducing the environmental impact of our products doesn’t stop at manufacturing—it extends to how they’re used and disposed of. Providing high-quality, reliable products is just the beginning. By offering recyclable product components and practical tools, we aim to make sustainable disposal more accessible and actionable for you.
To further support waste reduction, we’ve created the Recyclable Content Calculator, a practical tool designed to help your lab manage and measure your recycling efforts with greater confidence.
Waste management can be complex, especially when dealing with consumables made from mixed plastic materials.
At Tecan, we’re committed to building sustainability into our practices and providing tools to help our customers do the same.
Using the calculator is straightforward
Effective waste management is a key aspect of reducing environmental impact. That’s why we’ve developed a comprehensive Recycling Guide that provides clear information on recycling and disposing of consumables responsibly.
Tell us about your sustainability efforts. How we have helped your goals or what else can do to help you achieve them, please reach out to us at consumables@tecan.com.
By integrating the Recycling Guide and Calculator into your lab’s daily practices, you become part of a larger effort to improve waste management systems and foster a more sustainable research environment. Together, we can take steps toward more sustainable lab practices.
ACT stands for Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency. It is an environmental labeling program offered by My Green Lab. Like nutrition labels, the ACT label shows how products ‘rate’ in sustainability-related categories.
This helps you make responsible choices about the products you use in your laboratory achieved through a third party verified process.
We hope the recyclable content calculator becomes a valuable tool for your lab. If you have feedback or suggestions for improvement, please reach out to us at consumables@tecan.com.
